I just got word from the County Registrar’s Office that Shelia Jackson, president of the San Diego Unified school board, has filed papers to run for the county Board of Supervisors.
Jackson would run for the seat currently held by Supervisor Ron Roberts in the 2010 election. She could end up facing a one-time political ally, City Councilman Donna Frye, who has also been interested in the job. The filings confirm a long-running rumor, earlier reported in the Gay and Lesbian Times, that Jackson was eyeing the seat.
It’s still very early, but this move could have big implications for San Diego Unified. If Jackson left the school board for the race, not two but three school board seats would be up for election next year, breaking the current majority held by Jackson and new board members Richard Barrera and John Lee Evans. The trio enjoyed support from the teachers union during their campaigns last fall and have been criticized since for labor-friendly decisions such as adopting a project labor agreement. If Jackson heads off for the County Board, control of the school board would once again be up in the air.
