Mayor Jerry Sanders has appointed Bob Watkins as chairman of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority.
In a letter today, Sanders wrote:
The Regional Airport Authority is at a unique point in its history as it grapples with the required structural changes prescribed by [Senate Bill] 10. As the membership of the board changes over the next year, I think it is important to keep a steady, experienced hand at the helm of the Airport Authority Board to bridge the transition.
Senate Bill 10 is the legislation authored by state Sen. Christine Kehoe that changed the appointment process for authority members and stripped them of their six-figure salaries.
Watkins, who’s served on the authority since December 2006, takes over for Alan Bersin, the former chairman, who left to work on federal border issues.
Robert Gleason, whom Sanders nominated for the authority’s board, has been confirmed by the City Council and will fill Bersin’s vacancy.
