I ran into former San Diego Unified school board member Mitz Lee at the Taxpayers Association forum on dropouts this morning. She handed me a big blue brochure for something called Californians for Quality Education.
Lee explained that the new group is an offshoot of her longstanding group, the Alliance for Quality Education, which she revived after losing her reelection bid last fall. The brochure reads, “We believe that bureaucrats, politicians, employee unions and other special interest groups that benefit from the status quo are not viable catalysts for reform.”
Lee has particular reason to be upset with employee unions: The San Diego Education Association campaigned against her last fall.
The group’s goals include training parents to take leadership roles, fostering the use of accurate research, and lobbying Sacramento on education policy. It also has a new website with a blog where parents can post their thoughts.
