Washington Monthly magazine ranked the University of California, San Diego as the second best university nationwide in doing social good by improving social mobility, producing research and promoting service. Unlike most college rankings, the magazine ranked schools based on things like the percentage of graduates who went on to the Peace Corps, the percentage of students receiving Pell Grants and research spending.

UCSD was second only to UC Berkeley. Liberal arts colleges were ranked separately, with Amherst College in Massachusetts topping the list.
