The wait is almost over. Or is it?
Houston schools had to wait three weeks before officially offering their superintendent’s job to Terry Grier, the current superintendent of San Diego Unified. That wait is scheduled to end Thursday. But Grier said that doesn’t mean he’ll automatically sign a contract with Houston this week.
The waiting period is required by Texas law. It is meant to allow the public to weigh in on potential superintendents, even after a highly secretive search. Grier has come under fire during that period, with one state senator saying the pick didn’t make sense for Houston.
Grier said after a school board meeting last night that the negotiations were still underway on his contract and that the matter wasn’t settled. A draft of that contract, viewed by the Houston Chronicle, proposes paying Grier more than $400,000 including bonuses.
