A San Diego Superior Court judge sentenced Richard Burbank Thursday to serve 180 days in a county jail for identity theft. Burbank, 67, had been accused of stealing his half-brother’s identity and using it the last 30 years. He pleaded guilty in November.

I wrote a story in November about Burbank’s unusual case and how investigators came to discover him in Chula Vista. His former Massachusetts family thought he was dead.

Law enforcement officials said he’d instead taken his half-brother’s identity and used it to create a new life. He’d faced three felony charges that carried a maximum five years and four months in prison.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Anna Winn, the deputy district attorney who prosecuted Burbank.
