Parent activist Sally Smith was removed from her school council today after a student complained that Smith had hurt her feelings at a previous meeting by chuckling at a comment the student made about school fees.
“My issues are not with Sally Smith and her policies,” said Loraine Gutierrez, a parent who attended that meeting. She said the way Smith reacted was inappropriate.
Smith had served as vice president of the San Diego Unified committee that oversees funding for economically disadvantaged students. She recently raised concerns about schools charging illegal fees for activities and supplies, which she believes motivated her removal.
Smith said leaving the committee would not dampen her activism on school fees and other issues.
