While doing some research this afternoon for an upcoming story, I came across a great web tool.

It uses a 100 point scale to calculate how walkable your neighborhood is based on nearby amenities like parks and schools, grocery stores, coffee shops and movie theaters. It also lists all these amenities and their exact distance from your home.

You can compare how walkable your neighborhood is compared to other communities. It’s a pretty cool tool called Walk Score.

Just type in your address to find out how easy (or hard) it would be to leave your car at home.

I live in Hillcrest and my apartment’s location has an 81-point walkability score. That qualifies it as “very walkable,” the second best ranking. This is comforting, because my car has started making an odd sputtering noise when I’m stopped at red lights.
