The Issue

Not all kids come to kindergarten equally ready. Some went to preschool and some didn’t. Some are older, giving them an edge in maturity and motor skills over younger students.

The Challenge

Kindergarten got much tougher after California stiffened its educational standards, expecting kindergarteners to master things they used to learn in first grade.

The Dilemma

Educators debate how to level the playing field. Options include setting a higher bar to get into kindergarten or expanding and strengthening preschool programs.
