The Big Picture
Philanthropist Irwin Jacobs wants to transform Balboa Park’s Plaza de Panama into a pedestrian square, and he’s promised to raise $25 million to do it. But those plans are in limbo as they face opposition from preservationists.
The Next Step
On July 19, the San Diego City Council will vote on whether to support Jacobs as he completes design work and environmental studies.
What’s at Stake
Jacobs suspended work after a council subcommittee didn’t endorse his project. Mayor Jerry Sanders said Jacobs’ commitment to bankroll the renovation — and thus the project itself — will be lost if the council doesn’t signal its support now.
