A Shorter School Year
While the big labor deal at San Diego Unified may save teachers from layoffs and secure smaller class sizes, it also raises the risk that a school year that is already one of the shortest in the developed world will become even shorter.
The Choices
School board members say their only choice was between layoffs and shortening the school year. But their choices were limited by the union, which refused to consider other options that wouldn’t directly impact kids.
Sending a Message
Impacting kids is precisely the point. With this agreement, the union and the school board are doing their part to send a message to California voters, who will choose whether or not to pass new taxes in November. That message: If you want a decent education system, you’ve gotta pay for it.
