Evaluating the Mayor’s Tenure
We examined how key quality-of-life issues changed over the seven years Jerry Sanders served as San Diego mayor.
The Good
Crime is down and so is the time it takes police to respond to calls. Hours at recreation centers held steady. Most surprisingly, city library hours — once were veering toward extinction — improved by almost 10 percent during Sanders’ tenure.
The Bad
The one key area that shows definitive decay is street conditions. Other numbers, notably those relating to the Fire Department, don’t appear here. That’s because they were incomplete and kept in a way that makes good comparisons tough. Sanders broke a promise to provide a report card on the services provided to taxpayers.
