This summer is a great time to take advantage of Ingenuity Charter School’s independent study summer program, available to anyone throughout San Diego County. The community is eligible to make up credits, take a physical education class, or even take a written driver’s education course.

Ingenuity has open enrollment so there’s no cut-off on a summer sign-up date, and with most courses online, it’s a positive experience that gives students flexibility and motivation.

The charter school is expecting more than 350 students to take advantage of these independent study courses, almost doubling last year’s summer enrollment. Summer students will have the opportunity to utilize brand-new classrooms (and a shiny new gym!) from Monday through Thursday on O’Farrell Charter School’s campus. Ingenuity maintains a positive partnership with O’Farrell as both schools work toward embracing their student’s unique needs and steering them toward higher education.

Ingenuity Principal Tiffany Degraffenreid says when it came time to choose summer courses, the charter school turned to the community first to decide which options to offer.

“The summer program is really community-driven,” she says. “We listen to them and their students when they tell us what they want for their community.”

So what’s available at Ingenuity Charter this summer?

For students looking to get ahead or catch-up

Course credit make-up: Ingenuity’s online course curriculum called ‘Edgenuity’ provides a host of common core curriculum courses for grades 6 through 12. With a complete online learning independent study program, students can take it at their own pace without having to worry about missing class—which can often set students back even further in a traditional summer school setting.

These motivating online courses also give students an opportunity to exercise their time management skills. Edgenuity gives students a goal date to complete their courses and tells you what you need to do day-by-day to get it done.

Fast forward through physical education

P.E. courses: Three-day basketball and volleyball courses are offered to fulfill a full year P.E. requirement for students looking to get it out of the way. These courses are a great option for high achievers who may have impacted or extensive schedules during the regular school year.

Work toward a driver’s license

Driver’s education course: Ingenuity is one of the few charter schools throughout the state to offer this course through a certificate awarded by the California Department of Education. It’s the classroom portion of the course, which allows students to take the course online at their own pace. Students can speed through the course by studying four days a week at four hours a day, says Degraffenreid.

What else is going on this summer?

Ingenuity Charter School is launching a new resource center that’s just a short walk from San Diego State University. There’s easy access to the center at 6530 El Cajon Boulevard with a bus stop and trolley stop nearby. The aim is to give students maximum accessibility to Ingenuity resources no matter where they may live.

What’s next?

After the summer months, Ingenuity will continue with its regular online independent study curriculum, while providing hands-on classroom experiences that teach students to explore their potential while fulfilling Common Core curriculum. All 6th through 12th grade students are also fitted with a learning plan uniquely designed for their needs and career aspirations. Students can enroll at Ingenuity Charter School at any time throughout the school year with its open enrollment capability.
