About the San Diego Association of Black Journalists
The San Diego Association of Black Journalists is the local chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists. SDABJ advocates on behalf of African American journalists in San Diego. All fundraising efforts go towards academic scholarships and SDABJ’s development programs such as “Pro for a Day”, a journalism boot camp where students are taught how to produce their own news stories on a variety of platforms under the tutelage of professional journalists. SDABJ is a 501(c) (3) organization.
About the Photographer
Adriana Heldiz is a visual journalist with Voice of San Diego. She was born and raised in San Diego and is passionate about documenting the stories of communities of color while also helping readers understand local issues through visuals and explainers. Heldiz is also a board member of the local chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, which advocates for more Latino representation in journalism.
