The court-appointed receiver who’s been in control of the online charter school system’s assets since prosecutors brought criminal charges is trying to find whatever money is still circulating in the United States and get it back.

In 2019, prosecutors dropped a bomb of an indictment against 11 people connected to a virtual charter school empire called A3 Education. A3 enrolled tens of thousands of students into its online program. The catch: They weren’t all taking classes.
A3 brought in roughly $400 million over the course of less than three years. A quarter of that money went into private companies controlled by the scam’s two ringleaders, Sean McManus and Jason Schrock. Both have pleaded guilty to stealing public funds. The effects of the A3 scam continue to reverberate. It exposed loopholes in California education code that remain open and millions of dollars in public funds are still sitting inside companies in other states.
