Senior investigative reporter Lisa Halverstadt has been watching the city of San Diego’s real estate deals for years.

Consider 101 Ash St.: a notorious real estate endeavor in which the the city entered a lease-to-own deal for a downtown high rise. The building sits behind City Hall and was a prime locale to house city workers. But the deal was quickly engulfed in scandal and asbestos. After years of lawsuits and a criminal investigation, taxpayers paid more than $200 million dollars and the building remains vacant.

So, when Mayor Todd Gloria unveiled a big new deal for a big new building to be city’s new homeless mega shelter, Halverstadt dug in.

This week on the VOSD Podcast, Halverstadt discussed how this 1,000-bed shelter came to the attention of city staff, how it may fit into our most pressing crisis and the motivations of the man trying to sell it.

Also on Deck…

If there’s a softball scandal in the air, we’re going to sniff it out. VOSD Podcast hosts Scott Lewis, Andrea Lopez-Villafaña and Bella Ross discussed news out of Poway Unified School district as Superintendent Marian Kim Phelps lost her job because of the emotionally tumultuous sport. Students and parents alleged that Phelps harassed members of a local softball team her daughter played on.

Our resident social media influencer, Ross, breaks down more details of the complicated debate over San Diego power. Public power proponents are still pushing for municipalization of the energy grid. Listen to this show, and you’ll know what those signature gatherers are talking about when they invite you to “fire SDG&E.”

Producer’s Note: This is the last podcast I will produce for Voice of San Diego. I’m leaving this organization, which I love, for a new gig. The VOSD Podcast, its hosts, its fans and the weird craft of putting it all together has been the highlight of my tenure at Voice — and a highlight of my career. I appreciate every listener and everyone at Voice who helped me make cool things. Check the very end of the ep for more feelings.
