If you mess with one San Diego news outlet, you mess with all of them. (Remember, there aren’t that many of us.)

This sentiment struck local journalists and news consumers on Thursday when Times of San Diego announced it was being acquired by NEWSWELL, an offshoot of Arizona State University. With this, the longtime digital news website will become a nonprofit in an effort to “develop a new model for local journalism,” according to a post about the announcement. Sound familiar?

The week, the VOSD pod hosts dive into the current state of local journalism, and how this acquisition may impact it.

The crew will also take a look at the downfall of another local institution: Rubio’s Coastal Grill, which declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this week. Is it fair to blame the seafood chain’s slow demise on California’s recent minimum wage increase for fast food workers? We’ll discuss.

Lastly, we’ll explain the story behind San Diego Community Power’s new, less “green” power mix, and take another look at Todd Gloria’s homelessness promises as multiple local shelters appear poised to shutter by the end of the year.
