In an interview with CBS 8 Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Scott Peters, from San Diego, became the latest Democratic member of Congress to suggest President Biden may have to withdraw as the Democratic nominee for president after his poor performance at a recent debate.
“As much as I love Joe Biden, in those swing states, he’s having a hard time,” Peters told CBS 8’s Carlo Cecchetto. “I think the campaign has been arrogant in their response.”
He went on.
“We want to know what their plan is to win this election and turn these numbers around. If they don’t have a plan, then I think we need to move in a different direction,” Peters said.
Peters’ willingness to say this is a sign of just how far worry has spread among Democrats that the president cannot win re-election because of his age.
The numbers: Polls done after the debate show public opinion of Biden slipping further. “No incumbent president has had an approval rating this low at this stage of the election since George H.W. Bush more than three decades ago …” wrote Politico.
The New York Times has done several pieces and podcasts about how and why Biden should withdraw. Friday, it profiled voters who supported Biden but who want a different option.
The other side: The Democrats have not officially nominated Biden for president. But it’s just a formality at this point, unless he decides to withdraw before the Democratic National Convention, which starts in Chicago, Aug. 19.
Kevin Sabellico, one of the dozens of delegates from San Diego to the Democratic convention next month, has pledged to support Biden and plans to. He worked for two of Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaigns and hopes she someday runs for president again, but not now.
“As someone who struggled with Tourette syndrome in my childhood, I never excelled at public speaking either. The New York Times’ editorial blitz on Biden after one bad debate has truly repulsed me,” he told Voice.
North County Report: Why Encinitas Is Pursuing an Affordable Housing Project
A proposed 100 percent affordable housing project on a city-owned site on Quail Gardens Drive has been the talk of the town in Encinitas.
Some residents’ concerns have prompted city leaders to look at other locations for an affordable housing project.
But whether it’s at Quail Gardens Drive, or not, Encinitas leaders are remaining publicly committed to supporting an affordable housing project to help the city meet its state-mandated affordable housing goals. It is in danger of triggering the state’s No Net Loss law, which basically says cities can’t just plan for affordable housing, it must be built.
Encinitas could meet its affordable housing goals, depending on how some developments pan out.

Yikes: San Diego’s soccer world was abuzz after a former employee of the San Diego Wave FC women’s soccer team went public with allegations that Wave President Jill Ellis had been abusive and driven dozens of employees to leave. The Wave responded forcefully, but two other former employees jumped in with their own grievances. The Union-Tribune has a summary.

I’m very glad to see Peters speaking out. We cannot unsee what we saw and it cannot be corrected for an office that lasts for four years into the future. Sorry but Grandpa Joe has got to go!
If we have a shot at November it will only be with President Biden stepping aside now. We cannot wait until September for him to be stressed out exhausted to for something to happen. We need a young sharp mind to hold Trump accountable to the lies coming out of his mouth. I appreciate all of the work President Biden has put into our country, but we need one more sacrifice from him now.
It’s amazing that Republicans can remain all in for the lying felon who wants to destroy democracy , but Democrats get all twisted up and aren’t supporting the President who has been voted as the party’s nominee by the states’ delegates.
Scott Peters thinks an open Dem convention is his best shot at getting a VP nomination. The Dems panic reminds me of one thing: Harry Truman.
