As our podcast hosts sat in the recording studio early Thursday afternoon the Oceanside mayoral race was still too close to call.

Since then we got an updated count and incumbent Mayor Esther Sanchez’s lead went up from 31 votes to 173 ahead of Republican challenger Councilmember Ryan Keim. There are still 20,000 votes left to count. All this is to say, our conversation is still relevant because it takes such a long time to count votes. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This week on the VOSD Podcast, investigative reporter Will Huntsberry joins our co-hosts to discuss his latest story about how a man convicted of multiple felonies as part of a major law enforcement scandal is still doing big business with the city of San Diego.

Also on the show: What is a sanctuary city? With the re-election of President Donald Trump, the term has resurfaced and some cities are rushing to claim that they are safe places for immigrants without legal documentation.

Our podcast crew dusts off an old story to unpack what cities can actually do, and why that term is misleading in some cases.
