I’ve droned on about this before, but musical genres don’t seem to mean much anymore. Some have evolved so far beyond what they originally described that the meaning has completely transformed, while others more readily describe fashion trends than music.

It’s gotten to the point that hearing bands that actually sound like how they describe their music is a rarity. That’s why Witch Face is such a breath of fresh air. The band’s snarling brand of punk rock is, well, actually punk rock.

Witch Face, “Heretic”: One of the most shocking facts about Witch Face is that lead vocalist Mia Najor has never fronted a band before. The hard-nosed, no-frills instrumentation of “Heretic,” is infectious, but Najor’s ferocious, distorted vocals make the track positively float.

Like what you hear? Check out Witch Face at Casbah on Friday, Jan. 24.  Do you have a “Song of the Week” suggestion? Shoot us an email and a sentence or two about why you’ve been bumping this song lately. Friendly reminder: all songs should be by local artists.
