San Diego City Councilmember Henry Foster III joined the show this week to discuss the fireworks around footnote 7 and his push to roll back the city’s accessory dwelling unit density bonus program.
San Diego’s ADU density bonus program allows developers to build an extra ADU for every unit set aside for low-or-middle-income tenants.
The program has fueled neighborhood frustration because in some instances the program has allowed for large-scale developments. Here’s an example of one. Advocates have argued the program helps builders provide additional badly needed housing units in the region.
The City Council voted Tuesday to have staff return with a plan to remove certain zones from the density bonus program in single-family homes. The zones the Council picked tend to have larger lot sizes, which allow for more ADUs.
The VOSD Podcasts hosts spoke to Foster III about his decision to push for changes to the program.
