Wednesday, July 12, 2006 | The city council voted 6-1 to authorize a clean syringe program in San Diego yesterday a year after it was suspended for lack of political support. The science overwhelmingly shows that the benefits of such programs are substantial.
But the important story for me is the vote of my council member, Kevin Faulconer, who could have easily taken a walk on the issue since his was the sixth vote in favor.
He worked really hard to understand the science and visited the site of the syringe exchange in District 2. This was obvious from his eloquent explanation for his support of a syringe exchange program.
A vote like that shows much needed civic leadership.
