We hear a lot about biocom and technology in San Diego, but there’s another innovative industry that has plenty of economic weight to throw around.

A report earlier this year showed the so-called sports and active lifestyle cluster makes up about $1.35 billion in annual activity â€” as much as hosting four Super Bowls in our fair city.

That cluster includes much of the manufacturing and business support behind the scenes of our favorite pastimes. Some 23,000 people are employed by 1,200 businesses within the industry, at places that range from Callaway Golf Company to your neighborhood yoga studio.

In this week’s San Diego Explained, Andrew Keatts and NBC 7’s Catherine Garcia explored what else falls into the fit-bodied sector, and what experts recommend San Diegans do to keep it thriving.

Catherine Green was formerly the deputy editor at Voice of San Diego. She handled daily operations while helping to plan new long-term projects.
