This week, on the last VOSD Podcast before the March 5 election, hosts Scott Lewis, Andrea Lopez-Villafaña and Jakob McWhinney run through the ballot — from U.S. Senate to City Council.
Thus far, the electorate seems unenthused. Politico reports this election is on track for record-low turnout. And it kind of makes sense. California voters aren’t tipping the scales on the Presidential election. Even the California Senate race (despite shattering spending records) is a surefire Dem win that won’t affect party control in Congress.
But our crew suggests you think of your vote like this: Who do you want in second place?
For example, San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria is as secure as it gets. So if you’re a T-Glo die-hard, who do you him to face? Who will shape the conversation and push Gloria in your preferred direction this year?
Lopez-Villafaña recently moderated a mayoral debate (sans current mayor) and concluded there’s really two candidates with a shot at the number two slot: Geneviéve Jones-Wright and Larry Turner.
Jones-Wright, a Democrat, is an attorney and criminal justice reform advocate. Turner, a former Marine and current a police officer, is a wildcard independent focused on homelessness.
Across the ballot, you could keep the same approach. It’s likely that Rep. Adam Schiff is heading to the Senate runoff. Who do you want him to face — and help shape political discourse this election?
