Wednesday, May 04, 2005 | County Supervisor Ron Roberts, thrice defeated in San Diego mayoral battles, announced this morning that he would not seek the opening left by Mayor Dick Murphy’s resignation.

An emotional Roberts stood in front of the County Administration Building with his wife, Helene, and told reporters that it “was probably the toughest decision ever.”

“I like what I do here,” he said of his work at the county.

Roberts said that he felt that the city was on the road to financial recovery and that the Murphy administration he wanted to see removed had essentially removed itself. The former architect lost to Murphy in both the 2000 and 2004 elections.

Murphy resigned last week and the primary election to select his replacement will be held on July 26.
