City officials announced today their support for a law that would enforce a 15-year mandatory minimum sentence for first-time sex offenders and force them to wear GPS tracking bracelets for the rest of their lives.

Proposition 83, or “Jessica’s Law,” is named after Jessica Marie Lunsford, a 9-year-old girl who was kidnapped from her home, molested and killed in February 2005 by a registered sex offender.

Jessica’s father, Mark Lunsford joined Mayor Jerry Sanders, city councilmen Jim Madaffer, Ben Hueso and Kevin Faulconer as well as District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis during a morning press conference, asking voters to approve Prop. 83 on the Nov. 7 ballot.

“If you’ve never voted for anything in your life,” Lunsford said, “If you ever vote for anything in your life, you need to vote for this.”
