Driving out to the “Jessica’s Law” press conference early this morning I popped on the radio and heard an intriguing song.

Intriguing, primarily because it was a math teacher … rapping … on KPBS.

It was quite a jolt to my system and I had to check about 15 times if I was really tuned in to 89.5 FM. Sure enough, right there on the airwaves, there was Grant Middle School teacher Alex Kajitani rapping.

Here’s an excerpt from the song “Test Time” off his CD “The Rappin’ Mathematician.”

What time is it? It’s test time. What time is it? It’s test time. Well take that math book off the shelf. Its time for your brain to express itself. Don’t matter if your black, don’t matter if your white, Latino or Asian. Yo, we all tight. You know I am best, at solving for X. I might drive a Honda Civic but you drive a BMX. Yeah you know what time it is. It’s time to take the test. Time to show everyone that you are the best.

Hear the interview and samplings from Kajitani’s album here.
