To April Boling: So you think we should save the city by making sure that the workers who clean our buildings, maintain our parks, and secure our buildings earn $8 an hour without any health care, without any vacation days.

Who will pay for their health care? It’s unacceptable and irresponsible for an employer (in this case the city) to expect the rest of us to pay. Where will they live? And will they have enough money to buy things and grow the local economy? Poverty wages are bad for the workers, bad for the city and certainly bad for our region’s economic health. But really, what I don’t understand is why you would want people who work for us to live in poverty?
