I heard back today from Arian Collins, a spokesman for San Diego’s Water Department. He told me yesterday that the city was increasing the number of water meters it was replacing annually. But he wasn’t able to turn up the exact numbers in time for my story today. He passed them along a few minutes ago.

Fiscal year 2005: 6,961 meters replaced.

FY 2006: 7,431 meters.

FY 2007: 7,500 meters.

FY 2008 (projected): 8,500 meters

The city has a total of 272,000 meters in its municipal water system.
