In a memo to school board members yesterday, Superintendent Carl Cohn announced that Chief Financial Officer Bill Kowba has been appointed as the district’s interim chief administrative officer. The appointment was effective Monday.

But according to Kowba’s e-mail out-of-office message, the CFO left the district for a vacation Wednesday, and is not scheduled to return until next week.

District spokesman Jack Brandais said he’ll check to see whether Kowba knows that he’s the acting CAO.

The district would not provide details about what happened to José Betancourt, its full-time CAO, other than to say that he is on leave. Betancourt has spent the last month negotiating with the district over the financial terms of his separation from San Diego Unified School District, after a majority of the school board made clear that they wanted him to go over his guilty plea in a federal criminal case.
