San Diego Police Department spokeswoman Monica Munoz just announced that areas of Del Mar Heights and Del Mar — all the way to the ocean — are now mandatory evacuation zones. The areas, for those focused on things like life and property are: North of Sorrento Valley Road and West of Black Mountain Road.

But then she added this unfortunate observation for the newest batch of evacuees:

“Del Mar Fairgrounds cannot handle any additional evacuees at this time,” Munoz wrote in an e-mail to media.

I called Kina Paegert, the information officer for the Del Mar Fairgrounds. She said that the area can absolutely handle more people and that, in fact, there are now about 1,800 evacuees at the facility — less than there were a couple of hours ago.

She said only livestock and other large animals wouldn’t be allowed in.
