A message on Democratic attorney Lee Burdick’s website says she has dropped out of the race for city attorney.
Here’s what it says:
I want to thank the many volunteers and supporters who contributed to my campaign for San Diego City Attorney. I am withdrawing from the race because it has become clear that, while my strength is the fact I can give the City Attorney’s office a fresh start, I have found it is virtually impossible for a newcomer to compete in the fundraising arena which is so necessary to wage a vigorous campaign. This is particularly true where the field of candidates opposing incumbent Mike Aguirre has grown to six.
I entered the race because I believe with all of my heart that San Diego needs a fresh start in the office of City Attorney. The voters thought they were voting for change in 2004, but what they got was someone so focused on “shaking things up,” that he has virtually shut everything down. Mike Aguirre has divided our City in ways that will take years to overcome.
I want to thank all of the people who have supported me, have contributed to my campaign, and have given me their time to listen to my message and to offer me encouragement. It has been truly a remarkable experience and I will always be grateful to my supporters and the new friends I have made.
A political consultant for Burdick declined to comment on the announcement.
