Councilman Brian Maienschein has endorsed Jan Goldsmith in the judge’s battle against Mike Aguirre for the City Attorney’s Office.

Maienschein was Goldsmith’s only Republican candidate in the race prior to June’s primary election. His entry into the campaign early this year stunned many local Republican pundits, who feared he would split the Republican vote against Aguirre and the other top Democratic contender, councilman Scott Peters.

Maienschein won 12.59 percent of the vote in June.

A press release just put out by the Goldsmith campaign quotes the city councilman:

“The past four years have been extremely frustrating when it came to receiving timely, accurate legal advice that the City Council needed to conduct business on behalf of its citizens,” said Maienschein.  “That must change, and I believe it will when Jan Goldsmith is elected City Attorney.  He’ll bring much-needed sound legal judgment and leadership to the office.”

Maienschein is the third city councilman to back Goldsmith over Aguirre. Councilmen Scott Peters and Ben Hueso have both thrown their weight behind the challenger.
