Incumbent City Attorney Mike Aguirre has won three more endorsements in the last week. He won support from the La Raza Lawyers of San Diego, Planned Parenthood and the United Association of Plumbers and Steam Fitters, Local 230, a local union.

Aguirre’s campaign quoted Amy Denhart, director of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, in a press release.

Mike Aguirre is committed to protecting women’s health and safety by ensuring access to reproductive health care services and supporting comprehensive sexuality education. His opponent has a long record of opposing the right to choose, and opposing common sense measures to prevent unintended pregnancy and the spread of sexually transmitted infections. Planned Parenthood is proud to support the only pro-choice candidate in this race, City Attorney Mike Aguirre.

In the spring, the San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council sent out a mailer attacking Aguirre’s opponent, Jan Goldsmith, for his support of an assembly bill, AB2774, that would have made it more difficult for a woman in California to get an abortion. Goldsmith was a state legislator from 1992 to 1998.

Goldsmith has run his campaign based on the message that he will be an apolitical city attorney who sweeps politics out of the City Attorney’s Office. He has said publicly many times that he has left behind his career as a politician and that he just wants to be a lawyer for the city without letting his politics get in the way of the job he has to do.

Aguirre is quoted in a separate campaign press release saying the support from the local union shows his campaign is gaining speed.

The momentum of support within labor is building in favor of my reelection and it’s exciting to see my old dear friends in labor joining my campaign to keep the City Attorney’s office working for San Diego wage earners.
