The California Public Utilities Commission agreed today to change its mind about splitting the 760 area code in two, preferring instead to adopt an overlay area code of 442 for all new numbers generated in the 760 code boundary instead of changing all of the numbers in North County to begin with the new code.

The change, decided tentatively last month and made official today, comes after a bunch of North County business groups demanded more hearings on the topic and petitioned for the overlay option rather than the 760.
