Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008 | Sherri Lightner won the District 1 City Council seat in large part because she and her dedicated volunteers who share her politics, including labor, did a lot of hard work in the community. Although many pundits seem to have a top-down view of power based on a “great man” view of history, I think they should read more writers like Howard Zinn and the late Studs Terkel to understand how the people make their own history and shape their own leaders, not the reverse.
