A new report is recommending that the city of San Diego move toward creating a nonprofit corporation to take over some of the fundraising and management functions of Balboa Park.

The idea of creating a nonprofit to take over some of the functions of Balboa Park has percolated for a few years. The new report by the city’s advisory Balboa Park Committee says the park will face increased competition for city funding, thus leaving too little money to provide the park with necessary resources. It says a new nonprofit could provide more cohesive long-term planning and better coordinate fundraising.

The committee is recommending the city create a task force to further study the issue, with the idea that it would ultimately lead to the creation of the nonprofit. Committee members are slated to adopt the report tonight at a 5:30 p.m. meeting at the War Memorial Building.
