I’ve gotten two more reports of CalTrans unnecessarily watering its freeway landscaping in the rain this week. According to two readers:

  • Sprinklers were irrigating Interstate 5 south just below the Nobel Drive on ramp during heavy rain Wednesday.
  • Sprinklers were irrigating Highway 163 in Balboa Park during heavy rain Monday. One broken sprinkler was spraying the southbound lanes with a heavy stream.

CalTrans contends that it turns off its sprinklers when rain is in the forecast and blames human error if any are missed. So far, we’ve hadfour instances just this week of sprinklers going during the rain.
