Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009 | About 14 months ago, radio station KLSD 1360 AM changed formats from Air America progressive talk to all-sports. Shortly after the program changed, the ratings dropped below the minimum Arbitron standard and have stayed there, at about one-fifth of the ratings KLSD had with progressive talk.
I don’t confess to know much about radio marketing, but if a station receives a rating 80 percent lower, my guess is it brings in less revenue.
Apparently San Diego is the 17th largest radio market in the nation, so there is potential to profit even as radio stations, especially Clear Channel, are laying off hundreds.
I believe San Diego can support a progressive talk radio station. We have a new president and with the failing economy at the forefront, public awareness seems to be higher than ever. Let’s hope that someone will step forward and allow us to hear an alternative to the repetitive Rush Limbaugh rhetoric and conservative spiels we are privy to now.
