Just a quick note: The Union-Tribune did a nice roundup today of the estimated teacher layoffs in school districts across the county.

Noticeably absent is San Diego Unified, now one of the few school districts in the area (and possibly in the state, from what I’ve seen in the Los Angeles Times and other papers statewide) to steer clear of sending out layoff warnings. School districts tend to err on the side of issuing too many of the notices, which are not an actual layoff, but give the district the legal ability to terminate a teacher later in the year. The result is turmoil at schools and deep skepticism among teachers that the notices are ultimately necessary.

If you didn’t see it earlier in the week, check out our story about how San Diego Unified is trying to avoid layoff warnings, and what the plan’s proponents and skeptics have to say about it.
