Another quick update on the golden handshake numbers: There are now 541 teachers taking the bonus, 92 teachers shy of the goal of 633 teachers. The deadline to sign up is tomorrow and workers often wait until the last minute to turn in their paperwork. School district spokesman Bernie Rhinerson called the numbers “very promising.”

I also got the numbers for other employee groups — and some of those numbers are interesting. Ninety-one administrators have signed up so far, exceeding the school district goal of 74 administrators.

That means we’re in for a brain drain. And that could pose its own problems. Last time that San Diego Unified tried this strategy, it ended up bringing more than a dozen high-ranking employees back to work as consultants to fill the gaps — gaps that the school district paid them to create. Read more about that here.
