San Diego CityBeat has confirmed that Doug Manchester, the local hotelier and same-sex marriage opponent, is divorcing his wife of 43 years, Elizabeth.
Most divorces aren’t newsworthy. But Manchester was a key financial backer of Proposition 8 and has repeatedly touted his Catholic faith as guiding him in his belief in marriage being between a man and woman.
He moved out of their La Jolla home in October, CityBeat now says.
I caught wind of that and asked Manchester about it in February, before divorce papers were filed in court.
Our conversation was short. He said this:
Jesus. I don’t know what business it is of anybody’s. We’re not getting divorced. I deny those rumors.
