I’d been hearing rumors about this since Friday, but he finally confirmed it himself: San Diego Unified Deputy Superintendent Chuck Morris submitted his resignation letter last week, the same day that logistics guru William Kowba was announced as the interim superintendent to replace outgoing Terry Grier.

Morris was the second-in-command to Grier and oversaw curriculum, instruction and the other educational aspects of San Diego Unified. He followed Grier to San Diego from North Carolina.

Superintendents typically bring in and replace top staffers when they arrive — and there is often an exodus of those same employees when they leave. If that holds true for Grier, Morris may just be the beginning of retirements and departures from San Diego Unified.
