Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009 | I have previously sent e-mails to Mayor Sanders and my City Councilman, Kevin Faulconer. What is accomplished by these bikers? A friend and I got caught in a holding pattern a couple months ago. While the bikers went around on both sides, many reaching out & hitting the car. The police officer (who was standing in the street & stopped us) finally got the order to stop the bicyclists and let the vehicles get through. That did not set well with the bicyclists, even though they are breaking all kinds of laws. In contrast to your story, I think this is a very dangerous situation. Would the police react the same if these were motorcyclists? Last month the cyclists were riding south on 9th, which is a one way street, going north. If I want to get together with others and walk on the streets, it would require a permit and specific route. Why is this particular event being allowed? I have talked to many others who find it to be disruptive, very noisy (someone lit a string of firecrackers), and dangerous to all. If their purpose is to promote bicycling, they are far from accomplishing that goal. If anything, the car drivers get angry & are less likely to be kind to bicyclists.
