John Rivera, chief of staff and spokesman for District 1 City Councilwoman Sherri Lightner, is out as part of the office’s restructuring, according to Rivera and a Lightner press release. Rivera said the decision was mutual.

“Based on my understanding of the restructuring that was the best decision for the office,” Rivera said.

The restructuring could include Lightner not having a chief of staff.

“My understanding is there will not be a chief of staff position,” Rivera said.

Erin Demorest, a Lightner staffer, said the councilwoman hadn’t decided if she’ll have a chief of staff, a position every other council member employs.

“John has been a great help to us during these initial months of my service as a City Councilmember,” Lightner said in her release. “His experience, knowledge, and insights have enabled us to get up to speed efficiently, and I am grateful for the help he has provided in serving the communities of District 1.”

Rivera began working for Lightner in February, leaving the deputy chief of staff position in District 2 Councilman Kevin Faulconer’s office. Rivera also has worked for former District 5 Councilman Brian Mainschein.

Lightner began her first term in office last December.

Rivera said he held no ill will towards Lightner’s office.

“I’m looking forward to great things from Councilmember Lightner and her very energetic and bright staff,” he said.

Rivera has been removed from Lightner’s staff listing on her city website.
