Last week, I reported that the 12 library branches that are currently open on Sunday wouldn’t have their hours affected and attributed it to Rachel Laing, the mayor’s spokeswoman.

That statement, which was based on a mayoral report to the City Council, isn’t correct. It also shouldn’t have been attributed to Laing.

In reality, under the mayor’s proposal no branch libraries would have Sunday hours except the Central Library and the three branches with private funding. Those three are Point Loma, La Jolla and Serra Mesa-Kearny Mesa.

When I asked about Sunday closures last week, Laing said the mayor’s full report to council should be correct. The report says “Sunday service at 12 branches is not affected” so I included it in my blog post.

Laing said she has clarified the wording to the council. A fact-sheet distributed by the mayor last week did make it clear that Sunday hours would be lost at the majority of branches.

I wasn’t the only one confused by the report’s wording. Former library assistant Anna Daniels said the wording in the report prompted her to call for the mayor to clarify the proposal because it contradicted the mayor’s comments to the Friends of the Library last week.
