The new president of the San Diego Unified school board is Richard Barrera, who won the job with a unanimous vote, replacing Shelia Jackson. The vice president will be John Lee Evans.

While the president does not have dramatic powers, it can be a political springboard for school board members, as our article last winter explains. Both Barrera and Evans were elected last fall, are considered sympathetic to the teachers union, and are usually part of the majority vote on the split board.
