The Push

Leaders of San Diego’s Asian community are gearing up for a push to create a ninth City Council district, which they hope will elect Asian candidates to the council.

The Argument

Asians make up 15 percent of the city’s population and are becoming more politically active, but unlike African Americans and Latinos, they do not have historical representation on the council.

Why Now

City voters last month approved Proposition D, which makes the strong mayor form of government permanent and creates a new city council district in 2012.
