The School Board Tradeoff
Less than a year and a half ago, the San Diego Unified school board struck a tit-for-tat with workers: Take furloughs now that lessen your pay and we’ll increase your pay in a few years.
Its Impact Now
San Diego Unified could get more state money this year, enough to tear up some pink slips. But budget staffers warn they need that same money to make good on their promised raises.
The Debate
The school board is split over how to balance the immediate relief of canceling cuts against projected pain in the future.
