After missing my turn a few times racing down Highway 78 in Santa Ysabel, I finally found myself on a one-lane dirt road stuck behind a huge tractor. As my car rumbled down the road and I cruised past the beautiful horse ranch adjacent to his property, I realized it was going to be a good morning.

Kelly Bennett and I were headed to a property owned by James Hubbell, a world-renowned artist and designer. Hubbell obliged us with a lengthy tour and plenty of great insights.

I’d been photographing all the little details of the house as we stopped inside a storage room. He told me that he was rarely impressed with architectural photography. “It shows too much,” he said.

I kept that thought in mind as I continued to document the colorful patterns strewn about his property. And when the tour was over and we were leaving, I couldn’t help but jump out and grab some frames of the neighboring horses.
